Question Five - Evaluation

From this interview I have learnt that our predicted target audience is correct. That people our age would like to watch the movie because of the dark theme and the cliff hanger it leaves you on. Building the suspense. From the interviewee words it was clear that they had enjoyed the title sequence and it was a positive way to start of the movie. From the title sequence he was not bored but engaged within what was happening.

Furthermore, they enjoyed the match cuts and camera skills as they suited the theme of the films and our audience. The camera work and editing was age suitable for our audience. The rough cut gave us both positive and constructive criticism which helped us with our final title sequence. We were told that the title sequence with no sound made it boring and loses interest. So we planned to include a age friendly theme song to match both theme and audience.

We got our audience from our twitter page which is where the interviewee had found out about the screening of our film. We gained further audience by uploading the title sequence on Vimeo.

Thanks to this interview, I found out that the title sequence was filmed nicely with good editing skills. Also the theme was suitable for the target audience.

TV ad
Poster
I believe there are many parts of the film that appeals to our audience as there is an unusual storyline for  a youth drama film. 1 part that appeals is when they see that there is no body where he thinks he can see one. This will be appealing as the audience would not have seen it coming, this part of the film would draw them in and want to know what else is going to happen. Our film would have appealed to the target audience as they will not see a film like this anywhere else.

Evaluation - Question 5

During filming the interview with Dominic Sesto, made me realised that our title sequence is really engaging for the audience. this is because what we achieved, our interviewee noticed i thought it was very catchy. The mise en scene would attract our audience because the dark clothing managed to create the impression that Abdul's character in the title sequence is a lonely and sad person.

The rough cut feedback that Marisa gave us was very helpful to us because the positive and negative feedback allowed us to improve our project. she told us that the match cuts that we done were spot on and that it looked seamlessly which was quite good to hear. Also she told us that the tracking shot, that we thought was shaky was actually okay, this helped us because it allowed us to stop worrying about it and move on. This gave us confidence to push forward and finish off our title sequence.

However we did we receive some criticism for example she told us that we have to redo shots because it looked unprofessional.
We created a twitter page to get it viral and noticed on a social media platform

Due to other interviews, i briefly asked what they liked about my title sequence and they said they liked the tense build up just before ben sees the dead person. Because some of the scenes are quite suspenseful it would attract the older public.

My Video Interview for Question 5.

From this interview, I have learned that the movie was very fun to watch and was full of suspense. The interviewee said that the people who would watch this are young adults because they would enjoy the film more than younger teenagers because the film has a dark theme. He also said that the film was filmed very nicely and an example he gave was when the bottle drops.

The rough cut feedback we received was very helpful because we gained both positive and negative feedback. For example, I was told that the match cuts were on point and that meant that the editing was good. Also, we gained some criticisms of our title sequence, for example, the lack of sound made the title sequence a bit bare bones but we did plan to put a song, foley sound and a voice over but we didn't put it in the rough cut because we wanted to put all the clips together. The role of feedback was vital for our title sequence.

So far we have reached our audience through Vimeo and a twitter page we had created. We also had a preview screening of our movie recently so we can see their thoughts on it.

So through this interview, I have found out that my movie had attracted my audience because it was suspenseful, the theme was interesting and the movie was filmed very nicely.

Visions Title Sequence

Production EXT - Branding our blog

We  branded our blog by several social medias, for example we created a twitter page as well creating a website at this link http://www.wix.com/.
This is because we wanted to get our film to spread out and bee noticed by people to view.

Extension Research- Who makes the title sequence?

Dan Perri

Dan Perri is a very experienced film and television title designer who has in the occupation for over 30 year. he has created for over 400 films  including the fomous Star Wars, Airplane and also Taxi Drive.
Dan Perri had a good relationship with the director (George Lucas) of star wars IV. This was very important because this allowed to be the designer of the titles which were widely praised for his great effort. without George Lucas the owner of Lucasfilm selecting Perri to design his title they would be praised for their titles. this suggest that they had a good relationship because George trusted Perri's capabilities.

Research-Extension Activity-Watching Documentary

1. What Thomas Sutcliffe means when he says that films need to "seduce their audience into long term commitment" is that films need to make sure that the title sequence needs to be entertaining enough so that watchers will be bothered to stick around. If the title sequence doesn't seduce you to watch the movie, the filmmaker has failed in trying to "seduce" you.

2. Beinex says that "instant arousal" has risks. This is because if a movie has an incredible introduction that grabs the attention of the audience straight away, if the movie isn't as good as those first initial scenes, audiences may not like the film as much as the producers had hoped they would.

3. A good beginning must have the audience know just enough knowledge on what the basics of the movie are. This is because if you give too much detail in the title sequence, you may be able to predict the story line of the movie. If you give barely any details in the title sequence, then the audience will not have a clue on what the movie is about and may leave them with a bitter taste on the movie.

4. What Kauffman says about the classic shot is true. This is because it almost acts like an establishing shot where we learn of the new location. But in a title sequence, you have to put a little more work in and the classic shot does this because it enables the viewer to learn where the movie is taking place and who is in the movie.

5. Kyle Cooper's movie title sequence for David Fincher's "Se7en" is effective because it shows us a very discrete showing of what our main character is like. Also because it is discrete in telling us the narrative, it makes us ponder and want to investigate.

6. For Welles' movie, "A Touch of Evil" he wanted to bring his audience straight into the movie with no soundtrack or titles at all. Universal Studios did not like this idea and what he was doing so they added a soundtrack and titles for the cast.

7. The idea that is the "favorite trick of film noir" is the idea where producers put the end of their movie at the beginning. This is done for suspense because the audience now know the ending of the movie but they don't have any prior knowledge before that scene so to find out what leads to this big finale, they have to watch the movie.

8. The reason why the Shining has a great title sequence is because of the way it is filmed. It is filmed with a birds eye view and is mixed with a tracking shot of a car. This is good because it builds suspense in a way because it is like something is watching or following this car to a place and when it gets its chance, it will strike.

Planning- institutional detail

The film will be an independent production as its a low budget film.

Film4 would  our distributor because they have been the distributor of many UK independent films like Attack The Block and The Inbetweeners.
Also, Studio Canal have produced many UK independent films too like Attack The Block and because are film is your similar will thought it would be a great fit to have them as our production company.
If we had a big production company to help us produce the title sequence that we want to make our type of titles and credits we would have much better effects.
As our film is an independent film we don't have much choices of effects we would like to use.

Planning Extra - The Basics of our title sequence

What is the name of our film?
The title of our film is Visions

What's is it about?
The film is about a young boy called Ben Midddles who has a mental illness that is rare in society. He claims he is able to see how people will die but unfortunately he's the only one that is able to do that. His mother becomes increasingly worried and takes her son to the doctor for her to get an idea of how to treat him.
The doctor tries to convince her to send him to St. Anns mental asylum. The mother disagrees as she still sees him as a little baby that needs protecting.
She tries to help her son alone at home which has serious consequences for her.

Outline of the title sequence
The outline for the opening sequence is that the mother and a doctor having a conversation about Ben - confiding for advice and support.  We see the boy noting in a book recording all the deaths that he has seen. We then see him in a classroom separated from other students as he's a person that isn't liked by his peers.
Then he is in a park and sees a person die and he finds out it was just a vision that will occur and the title sequence ends with the boy writing in his notebook.

Extension - What is the purpose of a film opening?

The purpose of a film opening is to reveal the cast members as well as the crew that were involved in the making of the film. This is used to promote the actors or even the roles of the production team. Furthermore the institutions is also broadcasted/advertised which suggests to the audience if the film is a big budget company or a less budget company. (Paramount & Warp Films) respectively. This is also to set the tone of the film.

Thomas Sutcliffe says "Films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment"  meaning that, the title sequence is to fully engage the audience for them to be constantly watching the film. Also it's to allow the audience to stop what they're doing and to revert to watching the rest of the film. Thomas also means that the title opening should always be 'irresistible' interesting so it can entice the viewers so well they have a high 'arousal' watching the film

The director Jean Jacqueline Beineix says 'there are risks of instant arousal' implies that having a high intensity of interesting and very entertaining scenes at the start of the film could lead the audience to expect the rest of the film to be a lot better than the start. In addition it suggests that it will be difficult to maintain the same standards throughout the movie. Failing to do so could leave the audience becoming less intrigued at the end of the film.

"A good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet and at the same time make sure it doesn't know too little." This quote means that the people who create the title sequence have to strike a balance between how much you reveal to the audience and how much you omit to leave the audience wanting more thoughout the movie.

Stanley Kauffman (Critic) says "the classic opening as the film began with an establishing shot of New York City usually from the East side, then a close up of a building with a camera shot hitting up the building to a window." The classic opening works because the audience will know where the film is taking and where the character lives. Also we get a brief information of the society the people are currently in.

Kyle Cooper's title sequence in the film Se7en (Seven) was effective because the first scene we're shown describes/creates an insight of the persona of the protagonist. Another reason why it's effective because we (the audience) have an incline of what the movie could be about.

Orson Welles creates a title sequence that didn't consist of any soundtrack or even titles. Welles wanted the audience to be straight into the film 'A Touch of Evil." This wasn't approved by Universal Studios, they strongly disagreed his idea, who added a soundtrack and also titles creating the cast and the name of the film.

"A favourite trick of film Noir" is the quality beginning which the ending being shown at the beginning. This trick is to make the audience gave the desire for whats going to lead up to the beginning of the scene. Majority of the time it's clear for the audience the second time they watch it because they'll have w clearer grasp of what to look out for.

'The Shining's' opening film creates tension and also suspense by shooting in a birds eye view. The camera pursues the car like a predator because the camera is high up behind the vehicle. This makea it look vulnerable and will makes the audience instantly know that something bad is might happen.

Research-Extension Activity- Who Makes Title Seqeunces

Kyle Cooper
Kyle Cooper is a veteran film title producer. He has produced many great title sequences in both film and television. Some of his work includes films like the great crime-drama Se7en and the explosive comic book movie The Avengers. His television work includes shows like The Walking Dead and American Horror Story.

Relationship
The relationship between the movie title producer and the director of the movie is very important. The director of the movie usually gets to choose the producer of the title. This is evident with David Fincher's movie, Se7en. In this, originally for the title, the producer was going to be Mark Romanek, but Fincher chose Cooper over Romanek for the title. This was important because Cooper's intro is considered one of the best and it would've been different if it wasn't by him. This shows that the relationship is important.

Our final editing lesson feedback

As we finished out title sequence early we got Marisa to watch over out title sequence and she gave us some feedback to make our title sequence better to gain more marks. We will complete her feedback to make out title sequence better and make sure its complete.
  • To make sure that the titles fit within the box
  • the title of the film shouldn't be at the ending
  • pay attention to the order of the titles
  • the actors title sequences all have the same time
  • Make sure we do not use the same name twice

Planning- Independent vs mainstream institution and target audience

In independent films they tend to have less titles in the title sequence. In lesson we watched beautiful thing and mean girls. Beautiful Thing being the independent film had less titles in the title sequence as they have a smaller budget they tend to have a smaller cast and less backstage crew. For example they had some of the actors names the producer. However, Mean Girls have more titles as it is mainstream. They have more titles such as more cast and more back stage crew due to the larger budget that they have which allows them to have more of a bigger crew and more cast to make the film better.
When Beautiful Thing was released they had an opening weekend box office figures of $33,931. It was also released worldwide through a film festival rather than in cinemas.
When Mean Girls was released on the opening weekend they had a box office figure of $24,432,195. Unlike Beautiful Thing, Mean Girls was released world wide in cinemas as it is a mainstream film.

Target Audiences

I have researched a few of the target audiences for different films to find out what age range of people watch these movies.

The Inbetweeners 2
Target audience:
Male
18-24

Target audience:
Male
25-39

Different teen films have different target audiences as they wish that the target audience that they are aiming for will keep this movie as their favourite teen film.

Production- Second filming session

Wednesday 4 March 2015

Production-Our Final Editing Session

In our final editing session, we aimed to complete a variety of tasks. Firstly, we wanted to put all the titles into the editing software (Final Cut Pro), create a song/jingle for the production and distribution idents, to create a score for the title sequence and to complete our title sequence. We first made the jingles which was very easy to create. We then created a score. This was a bit difficult because it took us some time to create a suspenseful song that would flow with our title sequence. We then put everything into Final Cut and it was done. We then realized some things were on and that some titles weren't in frame properly so we made some quick changes.

Production-Our Third Editing Session

In our third editing session, we aimed to complete the remaining titles left which include basics like actors names, directors and etc. We managed to complete this.  Also, seeing our production and distribution ident's again, we thought to redo them as they didn't look professional, so we did them again.

Production-Our Second Editing Session

In this editing session, we planned to create the titles for our movie sequence, we aimed to create the movie title and the production and distribution ident's. We managed to get these done.

Production-Our First Editing Session

After we had got all of our essential shots done, we planned on producing a rough cut of the title sequence. This went well as we managed to complete the rough cut by the end of the lesson. Editing wasn't that difficult but it was a long process but as I had mentioned before, we managed to complete the rough cut. In this lesson we also managed to record the voice over for our title sequence too.

Production-Our Final Filming Session

In our final filming session, we planned to improve some shots which we thought looked a bit off and to re-shoot some that we got from teacher feedback. We did these shots very easily as we knew how it should have been done properly.

Production-Our Third Filming Session

In our third filming session, we aimed to complete the last scene we had left which was a classroom scene which had just included some basic shots of a classroom. This was very easy to complete as it only took a couple minutes to get roughly 6 shots done.

Production- Our Second filming session

In our second filming session, we had much more success. Firstly, the park scene which we tried to do in our first session, came out great and we managed to get some great shots. There were some shots we struggled to get right but in the end we managed to get a perfect shot that fulfilled our desires. Also managed to film the beginning and end scene which also came out great. Overall, this was a better filming session than our last because this one was great.

Production-Our First Filming Session

Our first filming session did not go quite as planned. We aimed to get the whole park scene of our title sequence  done so we can get filming done quicker. Unfortunately, it was almost impossible to film due to heavy rain which only allowed us to get some shots done. The shots we managed to get were good but there was room for improvement.

Screenshots of Editing lesson

Our last editing lesson - feedback

We finished the title sequence early, after adding some titles and music as well as our voice over. We got Marisa to watch it who gave us some feedback. Overall it was good and if it was summited liked that that it would be fine however she gave us a few point to make it better and to get more marks. Her feedback was:

  • make sure the titles fit within the box
  • the actors title sequences all have the same time
  • the title of the film shouldn't be at the ending
  • pay attention to the order of the titles
  • don't use the same name twice

Once we do this then we will have finished our sequence.

Our last editing lesson

For our last editing lesson we are going to add the final titles and make sure our voice over sounds good. We still have to make a sound for the silent gaps which won't take too long. While people are working on getting those finished the rest of the group will blog unfinished tasks.

Our last ending session

In this session we are planning to add the final title that needs to be added we are also planning on adding in the sound which we are going to create and we also going to re-add in the voice over to make our title sequence complete.

Monday 2 March 2015

Our third editing session

During our third editing session we intend to finish off the titles and finish off the editing that needs to be done. We had some feedback from Marisa who advised us to change the indents as they both looked the same.

Editing lesson

For this lesson we are going to edit the rest of our scenes. We will add music and some title sequences within the three hour lesson, then finish the title sequences in Monday's lesson. While Abdul and Curtis work on editing, myself and Nikita will be working on blog posts and feedback.

Friday 20 February 2015

Second filming session

Our second filming session that we completed was very successful as we managed to refilm all the parts that needed to be refilmed, and make it better due to the better weather that we had and our group being more dedicated to complete all the filming that had to be done so we didn't have to go back out into the cold.

Rough Cut of Visions

Here is the first rough cut of our teen drama title
sequence called Visions.

Wednesday 11 February 2015

Feedback on rough cut

Feedback

pace
match cut on point
fading
long gaps
out of focus on the book
add music to speed up
add voice over
get rid of long tracking and change for short cuts

Pace:
She told us that the pace of our title sequence was too slow and made it seem like it was dragging on. However, we will increase the pace of this by adding the titles in and adding the voice over, making it more interesting and easier for the audience to understand what is happening.
Match cut on point:
Marisa also told us that or match cuts that we included in our title sequence are on point and they match completely making it continuous and not jumpy.
Long gaps:
Marisa said that the gaps that we have in the rough cuts are too long. However when we add in the titles the gaps will be shorted they are just there for us to remember where we are going to add the titles in. We will add our titles on to a black screen but we will also add a few of the title on to the moving image.
Out of focus on the book:
The clip where we have the main character writing in the book is out of focus. To resolve this we plan on re-filming this part of the title sequence to improve the quality.
Get rid of the long tracking and change them for short cuts.
Marisa told us that we shouldn't use the long tracking shot as it is not steady and it is too long, we will change this by using the short clips that we filmed of the classroom scene making it better quality.

To improve our title sequence we will take up the feedback that Marisa gave us. We will also add in some titles and fix the fades in to the title sequence to make it better.

Our lesson - 11/02/2015

Filming and Editing

During today's morning lesson we filmed in Islington Green to get a better shot of our tracking of the main character. This only took us 15 minutes so we headed back to college. When we got back to college we began editing and creating the soundtrack using Final Cut pro and Garage band. While two of our group was busy doing that. We decided to record the voice over so we had all of our elements together.

After that was completed we took it back to the group were it will soon be edited. In the next lesson.

By the end of this lesson we hope to have all clips put together in order and have our rough cut complete with a few titles.

Filming and Editing lesson

We had to go over the beginning scene of tracking because our other clips were too shaky.
Recording our voice over with Marisa and Dan
Editing begins with Abdul using Final Cut Pro
Curtis starts to make the backing music using Garage band

Planning-Script

Mother: Dr.Willis, it's my son again, he's scaring me now, I don't know what to do...

Dr.Willis: Calm down Mrs.Middles, what has happened now?

Mother: He left the house at 3:30 this morning, sat down on the road and started screaming. I can't take it anymore, he needs some sort of medication.

Dr.Willis: This is the fifth time you have come for an appointment,  he needs to seek serious medical attention and the only way he can receive this is by staying at St. Anns.

Mother: I am not sending my son to a bin full of lunatics, he just needs some medicine, give him anti-biotics, give him a vaccine, just give me something to cure him.

Dr.Willis: A serious mental illness like that isn't curable with anit-biotics or vaccines or any type of medication. He need to be treated with therapy and St. Anns will give him the best therapy that he will get and your worries will be gone.

Mother: I have told you many times, that I will keep my son with me at all times and that is final.

Dr.Willis: Well if you keep him with you then I can do nothing for you and you will have to treat him by yourself.

Mother: Fine, I will and he will live like a normal teenager should and he will do things an ordinary one will do!

Dr.Willis: Ok, but if I hear anything bad about your son, you will give me no option but to call St. Anns and your son will be taken to the hospital.

Mother: No that's not going to happen under my watch!

Dr Willis: Well it will happen but look after the boy and he should be fine.

Mother: I will doctor, he will be cured.

Dr.Willis: I'm sure he will.

Mother: But..

Dr.Willis: Yes Mrs.Middles?

Mother: I'm still very worried.

First filming session

For our first filming session we found it hard because of the weather conditions. Our first problem was the sound on the camera wasn't working which meant we had to call up college and fix the problem over the phone. The second problem we had was it started to rain heavily which meant to we had to wait under a cafe shelter until it had stopped. After ten minutes and when the equipment had dried we began to film again. However we didn't have very long as the rain took up most of our time. Once we got back to college we had to put it on a video drive before we could leave lesson.

Production- First Stages of filming Evaluation

In this screen shot, we found out that we couldn't use this clip for our title sequence because Abdul's head soon became out of the screen.
Secondly we can't use the footage from this clip because Abdul's head because out of focus and out of shot.
Also we will not be using this clip because there is a transport in the background which ruins the mise en scene as it takes the main focus away from the character.
Due to mise en scene, again, we cannot use this footage as the continuity had been ruined because Abdul's hood was down.
Lastly we cannot use this clip as there is someone in the background and the characters head goes out of shot.

When we next film, we know to look out for these things and adjust our filming skills.
